Reflect: Online Racism Reflection

For ETEC 510, we regularly had to identify important keywords from our weekly readings and reflect on their significance to share in our class discussion forums. The rise of intolerance and hate online, along with the extreme amount of available misinformation and disinformation is a significant issue that deeply concerns me. In my reflection on online racism, I wrote “In our current world, it has become pretty clear that the internet itself is fuelling racism, conspiracies, and hate in more ways most of us can probably imagine. Therefore, I think that it is so important that anyone that uses the internet has an awareness of how the internet is currently used as a tool for racism and oppression.” It is only with this awareness that we can begin to address it through education and awareness. Through this reflection, I explored some of Lisa Nakarmura’s work regarding racism and digital media. There are so many wonderful scholars with strategies and tools available for those looking to break down barriers and dismantle online oppression. We just need to spread the word and work collectively to demand change.
