Reflect: Usability Definition
When designing online content, applications, experiences, or tools it is incredibly important to consider the needs of the user in relation to the usability of the final product the designer is creating. Defining usability can be a lot more complex than one would initially think it would be. However, there are many considerations that go into analyzing the needs of the user especially when we want the technology to help improve accessibility, and in the tech world their are designer positions that are mainly responsible for usability considerations: UX (user experience) designers. For ETEC 511, part of the course requirement was to keep a blog for posting assignments and (individual intellectual property) tasks. One of these tasks was to arrive at my own definition of usability, as well as educational usability. In included my definitions in my summary in the video above, but ultimately, I feel that usability can also be summarized with the word “usefulness”. Is this designed in a way that will be useful to all end users? Designing with usability in mind can really help to break down barriers, especially when careful consideration is made to ensure digital tools are assistive and accessible.
