I really enjoy building a mind map when I am exploring a topic. Developing an overarching question to investigate really helps to focus my research, while creating a mind map requires a high level of analysis in order to identify and explain the relationships between concepts. Mind maps provide a great visual to demonstrate conceptual understanding of a topic, and highlight how learning is a process of building upon our prior knowledge and that deep learning involves more than just memorization.
